Nathan

Loved by bonobos and humans alike, Nathan died May 15, 2009, of an advanced state of lymphoma.

He was the son of Panbanisha and the late P-Suke and had lived at the Language Research Center at Georgia State University, Atlanta, before moving to Great Ape Trust in 2005.

Although it is believed great apes do not like water because they cannot swim, Nathan enjoyed water games, according to his caretaker friends. He enjoyed taking baths, splashing water on the floor to create a slip-and-slide game and being sprayed by a low-pressure hose while running back and forth and trying to hide.

"Being the youngest, Nathan sometimes got the short end of the stick and got last choice at everything, including bedtime blankets," caretakers said. "He was often ‘asked’ to give up his food to another group member. However, through it all, he was a peacemaker who wanted everyone to get along."

Nathan had a reputation among caretakers as "probably the most solid dude you’ll ever meet."

In addition to his mother, Panbanisha, Nathan is survived by his grandmother Matata, his uncle Kanzi, and a host of bonobo and human friends.
